Cockroach

American Cockroaches

•  Color: Reddish brown, with a yellowish figure 8 pattern on the back of the head
•  Size: 2"
•  Habitat: Basements and around pipes and drains
•  Threats: Allergic reactions and asthma in children
•  Prevention: Vacuuming, good sanitation, baiting program, and sealing the cracks around the home

German Cockroaches

•  Color: Brown to almost black, and has two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings
•  Size: 1.3 cm (0.51 in) to 1.6 cm (0.63 in)
•  Habitat: Garbage, cracks, crevices, dark sites, warm and humid environment
•  Threats: Impart characteristic odor to food, food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other illnesses, skin rashes, watery eyes and sneezing, congestion of nasal passages, and asthma
•  Prevention: Good sanitation, emptying the garbage, storing food in sealed containers, caulking holes around the home where pipes pass through

Oriental Cockroaches

•  Color: Dark brown to black in color and has a glossy body
•  Size: 25 mm (2.5 cm) to 30 mm (3.0 cm)
•  Habitat: Dark and moist places, decaying organic matter, sewers, drains, damp basements, porches, bushes, under leaf ground cover, under mulch
•  Threats: Contamination of food
•  Prevention: Seal crack around your property, stop water leaks, and ventilate moist space

Cockroach

Brown Banded Cockroaches

•  Color: Tan to light brown. It has two light-colored bands across the wings and abdomen
•  Size: 10 to 14 mm long
•  Habitat: Homes and apartments, living rooms, bedrooms; they avoid light
•  Threats: Signs of feeding on glue, paste, starch, stamps, envelopes, bindings of older books, draperies, wallpapers, and nylon stockings
•  Prevention: Caulking cracks, crevices; around ducts, molding in bedrooms, bathrooms, dining rooms, and other areas of the house

Black Widow Spiders

•  Color: Black, with characteristic red "hourglass" on back
•  Size: 3/4" length; 3/8" in diameter
Shape: Round
•  Habitat: Found around wood piles, under eaves, in boxes, and other areas where they are undisturbed
•  Threats: Venom is a neurotoxin; bite can cause serious pain
•  Prevention: Avoid bite by wearing heavy gloves while moving items that have been stored for a long period of time; check shoes before wearing them

Brown Recluse Spiders

•  Color: Light to dark brown, with characteristic dark brown violin marking on back
•  Size: 5/8"
•  Shape: Round
•  Habitat: Live outside in wood piles and debris, indoor in dark recesses and storage areas
•  Threats: The bite is painful and can produce an open, ulcerating sore
•  Prevention: Avoid keeping clothing on the floor, shake out clothing before wearing them

Long-bodied Cellar Spiders

•  Color: Pale yellow to light brown or gray
•  Size: ¼-3/8" (6-9 mm)
•  Shape: Long skinny legs with a small body
•  Habitat: Found in dark and damp places such as cellars, basements, and crawl spaces, corners of garages, sheds, barns, warehouses, on eaves, windows, ceilings, in closets, sink cabinets, and bath-traps
•  Threats: Do not pose a threat, venom is not very potent
•  Prevention: Seal cracks on the outside of the home, using yellow light bulbs for exterior lighting, lowering the humidity in basements, cellars and crawl space

House Spiders

•  Color: Yellowish brown, abdomen dirty white with a few dark spots (sometimes with a black triangular spot in the center) to almost black, with several dark stripes meeting at an angle above the tip of abdomen; legs
•  Shape: Elongated abdomen
•  Size: 3/16 – 5/16" (female) 1/8 – 3/16" (male)
•  Habitat: Found inside structures, upper corners, under furniture, in closets, angles of window frames, basements, garages, crawl spaces, around windows and under eaves
•  Threats: Causes nuisance 
•  Prevention: Seal cracks and use screens on windows and doors, use a vacuum to remove adults, egg sacs, and webs

Jumping Spiders

•  Color: Usually black, sometimes brown, tan, or gray, and usually with pale markings of white, gray, yellow, red, blue and / or green. They are normally covered with hairs or scales, often brightly colored
•  Shape: Compact with relatively short legs
Size: 1/8 – 3/4"
•  Habitat: Inside it is found under furniture, in drapery folds, between books on bookshelves, in cracks found in wood floors, around door and window molding, etc., outside it is found running over tree bark, under stones and boards, on bushes, fences, decks and the outside of buildings
•  Threats: The bite but are not dangerous
•  Prevention: Sealing cracks and screening doors and windows, removal of outdoor harborages

Earwigs

•  Color: Dark brown
•  Shape: Long, narrow
•  Size: 1
•  Habitat: Found under piles of lawn debris, mulch or in tree holes

•  Prevention: Seal cracks and crevices, remove harborage sites such as leaf piles, mulch piles or other vegetation

Silverfish

•  Color: Silver to brown
•  Shape: Oval, elongated
•  Size: ¾ inches
•  Habitat: Found in moist, humid areas in the home, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics
•  Threats: Nuisance pest, contaminate food, damage paper goods such as wallpaper and books
•  Prevention: Installation of dehumidifier for your home, repair leaky pipes and drains, eliminate or repair any moldy or wet wood, avoid storing old books and magazines in basements, attics and garages

Pillbugs

•  Color: Dark brown to black
•  Shape: Oval; round when rolled up
•  Size: 3/4"
•  Habitat: Found in moist locations, under damp objects or under vegetable debris
•  Threats: Nuisance pest
•  Prevention: Eliminate food sources such as vegetable or plant debris

House Crickets

•  Color: Yellowish brown with 3 dark cross-bands on head
•  Shape: Long with short, stout hind legs; threadlike antennae, longer than body
•  Size: 3/4- 7/8 " (16-22 mm)
•  Habitat: During warm weather, found in garbage dumps; during cold, seek shelter indoors, especially in places such as sheds and houses, seeking areas of moisture and fermentation
•  Threats: Damage clothing, carpeting and other fabrics including wool, cotton, silk, synthetics, and clothes soiled with perspiration
•  Prevention: Eliminate areas of moisture near your home by mowing lawns, weeding plant beds and removing woodpiles, seal points of entry outside the home
